Agronomic divergence of sorghum hybrids for silage yield in the semiarid region of Paraiba R. Bras. Zootec.
Silva,Thiago Carvalho da; Santos,Edson Mauro; Azevedo,José Augusto Gomes; Edvan,Ricardo Loiola; Perazzo,Alexandre Fernandes; Pinho,Ricardo Martins Araújo; Rodrigues,José Avelino Santos; Silva,Divan Soares da.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic divergence of 25 sorghum hybrids (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) in the semiarid region of Paraiba. A randomized block design with three replications was used for evaluation of plant height (PH), total natural matter production (TNMP) and total dry matter production (TDMP) and the percentage of components of DM (panicle, leaf blade, stem and dead matter) of the following hybrids: 866005, 866019, 866033, 866034, 866035, 866036, 866037, 866040, 866041, 866042, 866043, 866044, 870025, 870031, 870035, 870041, 870051, 870067, 870081, 870085, 870095, 1F305, BRS 610, Volumax, and XBS60329. Hybrid 1F305, followed by hybrid 866034, presented the highest average PH. There was a range from 7.679 to 20.948 kg/ha...

Agronomic evaluation of 32 sorghum cultivars in the Brazilian semi-arid region R. Bras. Zootec.
Perazzo,Alexandre Fernandes; Carvalho,Gleidson Giordano Pinto de; Santos,Edson Mauro; Pinho,Ricardo Martins Araujo; Campos,Fleming Sena; Macedo,Carlos Henrique Oliveira; Azevêdo,José Augusto Gomes; Tabosa,José Nildo.
The objective of this study was to evaluate agronomic characteristics of 32 sorghum cultivars (Sorghum bicolor(L). Moench) in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The experimental design was set up in randomized blocks with three replications. Treatments were the 32 sorghum cultivars. The evaluated variables were: plant height, stem diameter, tiller density, number of green leaves per tiller, average leaf length, dry matter content, fresh matter production and dry matter production (DMP) in kg/ha, and the percentage of the components panicle, leaf blade and stem. To avoid associative effects due to the presence of positive correlation with DMP, the variables plant height, number of plants per hectare and fresh matter production were excluded for being part of...

Late nitrogen application enhances spikelet number in indica hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L.) Scientia Agricola
Zhou,Wei; Lv,Tengfei; Chen,Yong; Hu,Jianfeng; Zhang,Qiang; Ren,Wanjun.
ABSTRACT To increase rice yield potential, field experiments were conducted in farmers’ paddies in 2011 and 2012 to evaluate the effects of different nitrogen applications on the yield and panicle components of three typical indica hybrid rice varieties in Sichuan Province. The number of grains per panicle resulting from late nitrogen application (LA) was 12 % greater than that obtained from traditional nitrogen application (TA); this increase was the main source of improvements in yield. The number of surviving and differentiated spikelets (NSS and NDiS) resulting from LA was significantly higher than that measured under TA, especially for the Fyou498 cultivar, where the NSS and NDiS increased by 15 % and 14 %, respectively. Compared with TA, the number...

Synflorescence morphology of species of Typha L. (Typhaceae): anatomical and ontogenetic bases for taxonomic applications Acta Botanica
Carvalho,Jordano Dorval Tavares de; Mariath,Jorge Ernesto de Araujo.
ABSTRACT The inflorescence of plants of the genus Typha L. consists of a polytelic system with the fertile region containing staminate flowers in the terminal portion and pistillate flowers in the basal portion. Although some useful morphological information has been provided to characterize species of the genus, various divergent typologies have arisen due to mistaken interpretations that ignore the different degrees of branching in this indeterminate system. The present study aimed to identify structural homologies by comparing the morphology and ontogeny of the synflorescences of Typha domingensis, T. latifolia and their putative hybrid, T. x provincialis, using standard micro-techniques for light and electron microscopy. Analysis revealed that the...
